I promise this will be my last Oscars related post for the year. Just thought I’d share a few thoughts on the ceremony. Let’s face it – it was all pretty predictable. I managed 22/24 (and I didn’t even predict one of the categories). I was terrified that Gravity was going to steal Best Picture from 12 Years a Slave but to my relief, it was all as it should be.
[Apologies – AMPAS have removed most of the Oscars clips from Youtube – I will try to put them up again if they return. I also apologise for the crap quality of the clips that are here.]
I’m so relieved that 12 Years a Slave won because I think/hope that the win will mean more people see it, and as I’ve said before it needs to be seen.
Special mentions: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) for Best Actor (he deserved it) and ‘Let It Go’ (Frozen) for Best Song. Welcome to the EGOT club Bobby Lopez!!!
This will probably be a controversial choice but I’m going to have to give it to the guys of Dallas Buyers Club – Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey. There’s just something about a guy in a white suit. Ellen agrees. And I was a bit underwhelmed by the female fashion. If I had to choose I guess I would give it to Cate Blanchett.
Biggest Shock Win
Hahaha, just kidding.
Jared Leto for Best Supporting Actor in Dallas Buyers Club. He spent a great deal of it thanking his Mum who he brought as his date, before going on to state: “This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS, and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, tonight I stand here in front of the world for you”. Props, Leto.
Special mentions to Lupita Nyong’o (sweet) and Cate Blanchett (girl power).
It would have to be a tie for me between Idina Menzel’s ‘Let It Go’ and Pharrell’s ‘Happy’. The former is so powerful and Idina’s voice: HOT DAMN! But the latter is just so damn catchy! I also loved Pink’s Wizard of Oz tribute.
Ellen made the best joke of the night at the end of her opening monologue: “It’s going to be an exciting night. Anything can happen. So many possibilities. Possibility Number 1: 12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture. Possibility Number 2: You’re all racists”. Hilarious because it a) pointed out that 12YAS was the worthy winner, and b) made fun of that mindset. But if it had lost… you’d have to wonder.
Best Ellen Hosting Moments
Aside from the hilarious 12YAS joke, I especially loved her ordering pizza for the crowd (good job handing out the plates Brad Pitt) and then getting them to pitch in for it, getting the most retweeted selfie of all time, dressing up as Glinda from The Wizard of Oz, and numerous other one-liners.
Cory Monteith left out of the In Memoriam package. Yeah he’s more of a TV star but he’s been in a bunch of films and his death touched a lot of young people. #Oscarfail
Biggest WTF Moment
I used to LOVE John Travolta. As of today, he is dead to me. It’s pronounced IDINA MENZEL. Not whatever the hell you just said. WHAT EVEN WAS THAT?!
Poor Leo. Next year. (I don’t think this is actually from the Oscars but let’s pretend).
Bring on Oscars 2015! Only 356 more sleeps.
