I’ve said before that there are many things wrong with the Oscars, but they get me excited nonetheless. I had a few strong reactions to the nominees last night so I thought I would share my feelings about what was wrong and what was right.
Starting with the bad:
BAD: Gone Girl snubbed for almost everything
Best picture was never a certainty, but not even a nod for screenplay? This was one of my favourites of the year, but as some commentators have pointed out, it may have made the predominantly male voters uncomfortable – the dicks. At least Rosamund Pike got a well-deserved nom.
BAD: Force Majeure not nominated for Best Foreign Film
To be honest, I haven’t seen a single one of the nominees, so who knows – maybe they are all better than this Swedish film. You would have to drag me kicking and screaming to that Leviathan film though – it looks like the most boring thing in the universe.
BAD: No Best Documentary nominations for Life Itself or The Case Against 8
I’ve only seen Finding Vivian Maier out of the documentary nominees, but these two were far and above superior. Life Itself is about the most well-loved (and recently deceased) critic of Hollywood cinema – it’s flabbergasting that it wouldn’t be recognised.
BAD: Belle not nominated for Best Costume Design
The most exquisite costumes of the year completely unrecognised.
BAD: Into the Woods not nominated for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling
THEY MADE MERYL LOOK UGLY. If that’s not award worthy then I don’t know what is.
And the biggest snub of all…
DOWNRIGHT UGLY: The Lego Movie not nominated for Best Animated Feature
THIS IS AN ABOMINATION! This is the biggest miscarriage of justice in Oscar history! Are you actually shitting me?! This was one of the best FILMS of the year, period! Again, I’ve only seen one nominee – Big Hero 6 (which was very good) – but The Lego Movie was exponentially better, and I doubt that Big Hero 6 is even the least deserving of the five. Everything is certainly not awesome!
But moving onto the good:
GOOD: Whiplash nominated for five awards including Best Picture
HELL TO THE YES! This was my best of the year and is thoroughly deserving of all of its noms for best picture, supporting actor, adapted screenplay, editing, and sound mixing.
GOOD: All of the acting noms mostly playing out as anticipated
I may have had a full-blown fit if J.K. Simmons had not been nominated for best supporting actor for Whiplash, but all went as planned. It was also good to see a lack of old fogeys amongst the nominees, Robert Duvall excepted.
GOOD: Rosamund Pike nominated for Best Actress
DAMN STRAIGHT. You can snub Gone Girl in everything else but there’s no way in hell they could have gotten away without recognising Pike’s performance as Amazing Amy. Julianne Moore will likely win the category for Still Alice but I’m thrilled to see Pike nominated.
GOOD: ‘Lost Stars’ (Begin Again) nominated for Best Original Song
I LOVE THIS SONG! Can’t wait to see Adam Levine rock it out at the ceremony.
GOOD: ‘Everything is Awesome’ (The Lego Movie) nominated for Best Original Song
This was the first category announced and I was delighted at this funny nomination (I don’t know if it necessarily deserves to win though). However I just can’t comprehend how the film missed out on an animation nom. FOR SHAME.
GOOD: None of Sia’s crap from Annie being nominated for Best Original Song
The original music straight out SUCKED in that film.
HILARIOUS: When the announcer accidentally called cinematographer Dick Pope (Mr Turner) ‘Dick Poop’
This was the highlight. Don’t deny it.
