Oscars on Monday! (or Sunday for Americans). Same as last year – I’m giving you my predictions and wishes. Films I haven’t seen are marked with an asterisk (*). Who’s going to get the gold?
Nominees: Whiplash, Birdman, Boyhood, The Theory of Everything, Selma, American Sniper, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game (FYI, I’ve ordered these from favourite to least)
Who will win: Birdman. It’s difficult to split Birdman and Boyhood. We know it’s going to be one of them, but it could go either way. Both are worthy winners.
Who I want to win: Whiplash. IT. WAS. AMAZING. But unfortunately it’s not winning.
Snubbed: Foxcatcher. How can it get one of the five best director noms and not one of the eight best picture ones? It’s better than at least half of the films nominated.
Gone Girl. Fincher is never rewarded and it’s bullshit.
Nominees: Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game)
Who will win: Richard Linklater (Boyhood). Again, it’s between Birdman and Boyhood but most likely film and director will be split, thus determining my choice.
Who I want to win: Anyone but Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game). The film is SO overrated.
Nominees: Steve Carell (Foxcatcher), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Michael Keaton (Birdman), Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything)
Who will win: Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). Michael Keaton (Birdman) still has a shot but Eddie has won everything so far. Then again, young’uns don’t often win… This is the least locked of the acting noms.
Who I want to win: Eddie Redmayne. I loved all of them, but Eddie full on slayed it.
Nominees: Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Reese Witherspoon (Wild)
Who will win: Julianne Moore (Still Alice). This film and her performance destroyed me.
Who I want to win: Julianne Moore. She deserves it and she’s due. I loved Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl but it’s Moore’s year.
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees: Robert Duvall (The Judge), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), Edward Norton (Birdman), Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)
Who will win: J. K. Simmons (Whiplash).
Who I want to win: J. K Simmons. I loved all of these performances – except for maybe Robert Duvall who just plays an old guy for the millionth time. Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton were freakin’ amazing. But you just can’t go past J.K’s performance. Out of this world. “WERE YOU RUSHING OR WERE YOU DRAGGING?”
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), Laura Dern (Wild), Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game), Emma Stone (Birdman), Meryl Streep (Into the Woods)
Who will win: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood). She has won everything. She’s the most locked of all the locks.
Who I want to win: Meryl Streep (Into the Woods). Because Meryl. (Yeah fine, Arquette probably deserves it).
Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominees: American Sniper, Inherent Vice*, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash
Who will win: The Imitation Game. Which is BULLSHIT. It wasn’t even that good.
Who I want to win: Whiplash. It was bloody good.
Best Original Screenplay
Nominees: Boyhood, Birdman, Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Nightcrawler
Who will win: The Grand Budapest Hotel. It won the Writer’s Guild Award and the Academy will probably want to show Wes Anderson some love for something. But Birdman deserves it and is in with a chance.
Who I want to win: Birdman. It was crazy outta this world unique.
Best Animated Feature
Nominees: The Boxtrolls*, Big Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2*, Song of the Sea*, The Wind Rises*, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya*
Who will win: Big Hero 6. It’s the only one I’ve seen so I really have no idea. When in doubt, go Disney.
Who I want to win: The Lego Movie. OH WAIT. IT WASN’T NOMINATED. BECAUSE THE ACADEMY ARE DICKS. Biggest miscarriage of justice in the history of the Oscars.
Snubbed: The Lego Movie. They will rue the day…
Best Documentary Feature
Nominees: Citizenfour*, Finding Vivian Maier, Last Days in Vietnam*, The Salt of the Earth*, Virunga*
Who will win: Citizenfour. I actually have no idea but it looks good. I’ve only seen Finding Vivian Maier and that certainly doesn’t deserve to win.
Best Foreign-Language Film
Nominees: Ida* (Poland), Leviathan* (Russia), Tangerines* (Estonia), Timbuktu* (Mauritania), Wild Tales* (Argentina)
What will win: Ida. I haven’t seen any of these and the only ones I’ve heard of are Ida and Leviathan. Leviathan looks like a colossal bore (I groan every time they show a trailer at Palace which is pretty much EVERY TIME I SEE A MOVIE) so I’ll go with Ida.
Snubbed: Force Majeure (Sweden). Even people who have seen these nominees agree.
Who I want to win: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Ditto. But I did love Unbroken’s cinematography too
Best Costume Design
Nominees: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Inherent Vice*, Into the Woods, Maleficent, Mr. Turner
Who will win: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Because colours.
Who I want to win: Into the Woods. Come on, give it something.
Who I want to win: Whiplash. DRUMS!
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Nominees: Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Guardians of the Galaxy
Who will win: Foxcatcher. I have no idea, but I couldn’t figure out if Channing Tatum was wearing prosthetics or if it was just his face so surely that means it’s good?
Who I want to win: Foxcatcher. So this amazing film will win SOMETHING. And because Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t deserve an Oscar.
Best Original Score
Nominees: The Imitation Game (Alexandre Desplat), The Grand Budapest Hotel (Alexandre Desplat), Interstellar (Hans Zimmer), The Theory of Everything (Jóhann Jóhannsson), Mr. Turner (Gary Yershon)
Who will win: The Theory of Everything. It’s won most score awards so far.
Who I want to win: The Grand Budapest Hotel. I love Alexandre Desplat (but not The Imitation Game).
Best Original Song
Nominees: ‘Everything is Awesome’ (The Lego Movie), ‘Glory’ (Selma), ‘Grateful’ (Beyond the Lights*), ‘I’m Not Gonna Miss You’ (Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me*), ‘Lost Stars’ (Begin Again)
Who will win: ‘Glory’. They’ll give Selma something after the snub accusations, and it won’t be best picture.
Who I want to win: ‘Lost Stars’. I LOVE THAT SONG SO HARD.
Who I want to win: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Very pretty.
Best Sound Editing
Nominees: American Sniper, Birdman, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Interstellar, Unbroken
Who will win: American Sniper? I’m totes guessing. I don’t even know what sound editing is.
Who I want to win: Whiplash. Because I want it to win everything!
Best Visual Effects
Nominees: Captain America: The Winter Soldier*, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, X-Men: Days of Future Past
Who will win: Interstellar. Or so I hear.
Who I want to win: X-Men: Days of Future Past. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!
Best Animated Short
Nominees: The Bigger Picture*, The Dam Keeper*, Feast, Me and My Moulton*, A Single Life*
Who will win: No idea. I’ve only seen Feast.
Best Live Action Short
Nominees: Aya*, Boogaloo and Graham*, Butter Lamp*, Paravneh*, The Phone Call*
Who will win: No idea in hell. If I was forced to choose I’d go with The Phone Call because it has famous people.
Best Documentary Short
Nominees: Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1*, Joanna*, Our Curse*, The Reaper*, White Earth*
Who will win: Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1. When in doubt, the Academy loves stuff about the war.
So there you have it folks. Tune in Monday (Australian time) for the results! And to see Neil Patrick Harris be just as freakin’ unbelievably awesome as ever.
