FILM REVIEW: Mary Queen of Scots (2018)

Having been in the pipeline for several years, Mary Queen of Scots, directed by Josie Rourke, finally makes it to the big screen. Based on John Guy’s biography, Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, with a screenplay adapted by Beau Willimon, the film sees last year’s best actress contenders, Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, star together at last, even if it’s just in one scene that has historical purists all riled up. The tagline for Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s latest venture advises to “Never lose focus”. While this could be taken as a warning for its audience to pay full attention, paradoxically Focus doesn’t quite demand so much because it isn’t all that complex. FILM REVIEW: The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013)

Despite clocking in at 3 hours, I would have been happy for The Wolf of Wall Street to keep going. It was a fascinating insight into the world of greed and excess, and it was funny as hell. Although I didn’t realise it until the end, Wolf is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (played here by Leonardo DiCaprio), fraudulent stockbroker and founder of Stratton Oakmont.
