FILM REVIEW: Spotlight

Spotlight (Tom McCarthy, 2015)

It’s apt that on the first day that Cardinal Pell testified via video link as part of the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse in the Catholic church, that Spotlight took home the Oscar for Best Picture. Spotlight takes us back fifteen years to 2001, when the Boston Globe’s ‘Spotlight’ team investigated the cover-up of child sexual abuse by priests in the Boston area.  It’s chilling to watch as the journalists react incredulously to the possibility of there being approximately 90 pedophile priests in the area, given what we know now about how far-reaching these heinous crimes were. The end credits list the cities all over the world to have uncovered further abuse – it is sickening stuff. Continue reading FILM REVIEW: Spotlight

Millions of Marvel fan boys around the world have been awaiting Avengers: Age of Ultron with bated breath, and most likely they will be creaming their jeans in delight at what has been served up for them on the silver screen. FILM REVIEW: Infinitely Polar Bear

Infinitely Polar Bear (Maya Forbes, 2014)

Maya Forbes has previously co-written a number of screenplays (including Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, Monsters vs. Aliens, and The Rocker), and now makes her directorial debut with her own personal story. Set over eighteen months in late 1970s Boston, Infinitely Polar Bear recounts the time that Forbes and her sister lived with their bipolar father while their mother completed a business degree in New York. FILM REVIEW: Begin Again

Director John Carney has referred to Begin Again as “a musical for people who don’t like musicals” which annoyed me a bit when I first read that because THOSE PEOPLE AREN’T IMPORTANT.
