The Edge of Seventeen (Kelly Fremon Craig, 2016)

Teen films are often guilty pleasures. They tend to tick the boxes of every cliché, and while they often have an audience willing to eat them all up, they are rarely critically acclaimed. Occasionally there are exceptions; Tina Fey’s Mean Girls – based on the parenting book, Queen Bees and Wannabes – tore down the very real destructive girl clans that exist in every school; 2013’s The Spectacular Now focused on the misery behind the bravado of a popular guy and the influence of parenting on emotional development. FILM REVIEW: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Francis Lawrence, 2015)

I may be scorned for saying that The Hunger Games is my favourite trilogy, but give me teenagers fighting to the death over Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or The Godfather any day. The first two films – The Hunger Games and Catching Fire – set a high bar for the dystopian future teen genre, with nothing yet coming close in quality. The first film instalment of the third book, Mockingjay, was somewhat underwhelming in comparison, serving merely as a set-up for the final showdown.
